Synopsis

Upon returning from a trip to another country, it is difficult to re-adjust to the society in which I live. The experiences of those other places and other cultures resonate in my mind. A Serbian expression says the man who leaves the soil where he was born will forever be cursed. To a great extent I can relate. I feel myself split among the places I have visited, the place where I am from, and the place I currently live. Each of these places beckons me to return, to stay, but I consider none of them my home.

Return is a single-channel video that expresses the disassociation with time and place caused by traveling between different countries, cultures and people. In the piece, I struggle to connect with the sights I see, with the sounds I hear, and with the languages I am confronted with. This video is the eighth in a series of self portraits in which I place myself at the center of the issue I discuss.
