PARALLEL

"The Great Machine runs blindly on,
and all things in it are but cogs."
— from The Dancing Wu Li Masters: An Overview
of the New Physics
by Gary Zukav
Synopsis

An artist creates a series of self portraits in order to better understand his own identity. These images give new life to past emotional states of loneliness and isolation, and by looking at them, the artist relives these experiences and is inspired to create more images. In this process, he discovers himself trapped in a cycle of artistic creation, caught in a loop that has no beginning and no end, an endless journey with no destination. He is merely part of a machine that he himself constructed.

Parallel is an interdisciplinary art work that deals with existential notions related to art, self image and the meaning behind creativity. The artist merges black-and-white photography with photo-realistic pencil drawings, and then reshoots the scenes in video to add movement and sound to the imagery. The text is inspired by philosophies of quantum physics, which are poetically interpreted in the context of art. Parallel exists as both a video and a live performance.
